This is a topic that is largely overlooked in the public safety world, and most chiefs quickly find themselves back on their heals when an actual event occurs.  This is a situation in which you only get one opportunity to get it right, wherein getting it wrong can severely damage a career.  The stakes of messing this scenario up are high, including relational damage and the loss of trust of staff, elected officials, the community, and the deceased officer’s family.
